We are delighted to announce that io, along with our partner Vanderweil Engineers, has been awarded the FEED for Element Resources Inc.’s Lancaster Clean Energy Center, a major renewable green hydrogen production facility.

A major renewable powered green hydrogen production facility coming to California.

Element Resources Inc. (Element) is pleased to announce that Front-End Engineering & Design (FEED) for its Lancaster Clean Energy Center (LCEC), a major renewable green hydrogen production facility, has been awarded to io consulting and Vanderweil Engineers. The project is located within the City of Lancaster, less than 100 miles from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. It will supply end-users throughout the greater Southern California Region.

At the Lancaster Clean Energy Center, Element will produce over 20,000 tons of renewable green hydrogen annually through its first phase, making it one of the largest green hydrogen projects in the state. This facility will also be one of the anchor projects in the City of Lancaster’s Eastside Overlay, the site of the city’s burgeoning clean energy hydrogen-focused portfolio.

The LCEC, which is targeted to begin commercial operations in 2026, will operate off-grid, using dedicated photo voltaic (PV) solar to power Element’s electrolyzers to produce zero-emission, renewable hydrogen. The increased hydrogen production capacity will serve the growing demand for clean mobility fuels as well as clean energy for manufacturing. The project will create about 250 jobs during the construction phase and approximately 40 permanent jobs.

The award of the FEED contract represents an important next step towards the proposed development of one of California’s largest green hydrogen production facilities. The completed FEED process will pave the way for Final Investment Decision (FID) and subsequent commencement of procurement for the major equipment packages and construction.

Steve Meheen, CEO & Chairman of Element said, “Element Resources is focused on our determination to drive the energy transition forward. Our collaboration with io consulting, with the support of Vanderweil Engineers to deliver the optimal engineering design, is a testament to our belief that real change comes from action.”

In response to the award, Richard Dyson, io consulting’s CEO, stated, “We are delighted to have been selected by Element to help them achieve the certainty needed to achieve FID on this critical and important project and look forward to building a long-term relationship with the Element team and hopefully become their owner’s consultant of choice.”

In support of Element and io consulting, Jeffrey Duncan, Vanderweil’s Principal for Power & Utilities added “This project will bring much needed green hydrogen capacity to the market and applies proven technologies at scale in order to capitalize on the Southwest’s abundant solar energy resource while operating independent of the electric grid.”

About io consulting

io consulting is an energy project architect that specializes in front end thinking to enable complex projects with greater embedded decision quality. Formed as a JV between Baker Hughes and McDermott, we approach projects differently – we start with the end in mind (i.e. we think from right to left) and do this – slowly – in order to achieve high-quality front-end loading (FEL) so that, post sanction, projects can be executed at speed, to budget and schedule certainty. We achieve this by bringing an experienced and established team with the required blend of technical, commercial and strategic knowledge, and capabilities required to achieve consistently successful project outcomes.
