power-to-x

io understands all aspects of the PtX value chain.

Power-to-X (PtX) refers to a set of technologies that allow for the conversion of electrical power (often from renewable sources such as wind, solar or hydro) into other forms of energy or materials that can be used in various applications. The "X" refers to different end products, depending on the specific technology being used. Some examples of PtX technologies and their respective products are:

  • Power-to-Gas (PtG) where excess electricity is used to produce hydrogen gas through water electrolysis, which can then be used as a fuel for transportation or as a feedstock for the production of chemicals.

  • Power-to-Liquid (PtL) where electricity is used to produce liquid fuels, such as methanol or synfuels, through a variety of chemical processes.

  • Power-to-Chemicals (PtC) where electricity is used to produce chemical feedstocks, such as ammonia or ethylene, which can be used in the production of a wide range of chemicals and materials.

  • Power-to-Heat (PtH) where excess electricity is used to produce heat, which can be used for district heating or industrial processes.

PtX technologies offer a promising way to integrate renewable energy sources into various sectors of the economy, by converting excess electricity into other forms of energy, feedstocks or products that can be used in a variety of applications.

We believe that PtX has an important role in the energy transition, particularly in the hard to abate sectors. Each project is unique with specific strategic, commercial and technical considerations that must be balanced.

io has helped clients identify and analyse the different options available to ensure the best possible vector is selected for their developments. Through the application of systems engineering and Decision Quality, our technical and commercial specialists conduct holistic system-wide techno-economic evaluations of the interdependencies of each PtX option ensuring that the solution most aligned with the project objectives and value drivers is identified.

The io team’s broad experience of the hydrocarbon and PtX market, end-users, processes and export options, combined with the expertise and experience of our parent companies, enables us to fully assess the full value chain of a project.

Our experience includes open art and proprietary blue hydrogen production via SMR or ATR technologies, the merits and demerits of each and the integration and energy optimisation aspects with the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facility.

We have performed detailed electrolyser vendor evaluations and developed balance of plant estimates for green hydrogen facilities from 2 MW to multi GW. With McDermott by our side we bring an understanding of hydrogen liquefaction and storage, and via Baker Hughes an OEM's view of hydrogen and oxygen compression technologies, and hydrogen gas turbines.

In addition to our capability in assess, concept-select, pre-FEED and FEED phases, we can also provide support with market analysis, business case development, emissions and certification assessments, offtaker analysis, technology and supplier evaluations, cold-eyes reviews, and due diligence assessments.
